The Bureau of Labor Statistics has indicated that some of the fastest growing careers through the year 2012 are in the following areas: Information Technology, Medical/Health and Interactive Media. SOTC’s Business & Information Technology Program is the only program on campus that provides training in all three of these growing career areas!
Students are offered courses in the following curriculum areas to prepare them for the world of business, such as:
- Voice Recognition
- Palm Handheld Computer Technology
- Microsoft Office Suite
- Dreamweaver
- Administrative Medical Assisting
- Professional Development
- Business Leadership
- Business Management Skills
Students can choose a specialized area(s) of study from the following career pathways and occupational titles:
- NEW-Administrative Medical Assisting:
Administrative Medical Assistant, Medical Office Assistant, and Medical Transcriptionist (2006). Learn the necessary skills to working in or managing any medical office including patient records, scheduling, billing and insurance filing procedures, and HIPAA Privacy along with computer software skills using the Microsoft Office Suite and creating medical PowerPoint presentations. Students also receive training in basic medical terminology and an introduction to transcribing medical documents.
- Administration and Information Support Pathway:
Administrative Assistant, Office Manager, Legal Office Assistant, Receptionist and Customer Service Representative. Students will gain a general knowledge of office administration skills that will include efficient use of current software practices that will enable them to succeed in today’s technologically advanced office environment.
- Business Financial Management and Accounting Pathway:
Billing Clerk, Accounts Payable/Receivable Clerk, Payroll Accounting Clerk, Full Charge Bookkeeper, and Financial Assistant. Learn accounting principles through hands-on applications and computerized accounting software. Second-year students can also prepare to take the Certified Bookkeeper certification exam.
- Interactive Media Pathway:
Multimedia Production Assistant, Desktop Publishing, Graphic Design, Web Designer, and Video Production. Study Web design principles through the CIW Foundations and Site Development Foundations. Use software such as Photoshop, Flash, Dreamweaver, Premiere, Encore and After Effects and others to create interactive media.
- Management Pathway:
Learn business principles to help you learn how to operate a small business. Students will prepare a Business Plan and complete project simulations.
Students may gain industry certifications in the following areas:
- Certified Bookkeeper — American Institute of Professional Bookkeeper
- CIW Foundations — Certified Internet Webmaster
- MOS — Microsoft Office Specialist
- Brainbench — Online certifications in various computer and business-related areas.
Students may participate in on-the-job training or internships as well as earn college credit through Murray State College or OSU Tech-Okmulgee. Up to 45 credit hours are available, depending upon your career pathway choice.
